March 21, 2009 World Down Syndrome Awareness Day

March 21 (3-21) is designated as World Down Syndrome Awareness Day.  This date was selected by Down Syndrome International to symbolize the triplication of the 21st Chromosome.

altAn integral part of USOD's mission is to create broader awareness and understanding of Down syndrome. We need your help to do this! USOD encourages you to think about a variety of ways you can promote awareness in your community on this special day.

We have a few ideas listed below to get you thinking.  Please contact our office if you would like to schedule an awareness presentation at your school, business or civic organization so we can continue to educate people regarding the true potential of people with Down syndrome.
  • Ask your employer to host a Dress Down for Down Syndrome Day at the office. USOD has posters and stickers you can use to advertise and can help you to get organized.
  • Ask your child's school to host a Dress Down for Down Syndrome Day.
  • Provide an awareness presentation to your local civic group, church business associates or school.
  • Send out cards to your family, friends, therapists, educators and physicians with a picture of your loved one with Down syndrome and encourage them to celebrate the day with you.
  • Send a letter to the editor of your local paper about what it is like to parent a child, teen or adult with Down syndrome.
  • Wear your Buddy Walk shirt with pride!
  • Make a donation to the USOD in honor of your loved one with Down syndrome. Funds collected from Worlds Down Syndrome Day will be designated to our newly created outreach program for medical professionals & educators.
